Trust me, more than one person is going to need the things I just got at the store for our trip. Remember your Ziploc bags for your carry-on liquids and I’ve got extra in case we need them. I think our biggest problem might be blisters from walking so I have several blister reduction and prevention strategies and then of course there’s cough and cold and headaches and jet leg–all of which have a remedy here of some sort. And don’t forget your ears popping on take off and landing–that’s what the gum and the Lifesavers are for and then I’ve got some protein bars (not pictured here) and the KIND plus bars in case anyone is feeling hypoglycemic, we can carry on. As a mom who has traveled with three children extensively in Europe, I know we will need to open each one of these on our trip. Looking forward to Tuesday!

Hey! I’m Stella and I am a geography major. After college I would like to work as a satellite data analyst or maybe something else. I am not really sure yet. I have a little bit of experience traveling abroad as I’ve visited the UK, Spain, Canada, Haiti, and Belize. For my documentary I researched the painting Salome With the Head of John the Baptist by Jan Adam Kruseman (here) . After learning about art looting during WWII through the book Monuments Men, I look forward to seeing the Ghent altar piece. I am especially excited to see the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam as his artwork is so popular and admired today. I am looking forward to seeing the classic city of Ghent where we will be staying. I am also extremely curious about Bruges as people I know have given it mixed reviews, and I would like to see for myself.
Getting Ready!

Hello Students and Friends-
As we get ready for our trip, just a few reminders and things to think about before we meet at the CLT airport on Tuesday, January 3rd, at 10am by the Delta Airlines Departures counter. I will have several things to go over once we are all assembled and before we go through security. Trust me, we will need EVERY bit of that time before our take-off!
- Find your passport and keep it in your sight until Tuesday. This is the most important document you need. Make sure you bring it with you to the airport, of course!
- Bring US $ and/or Euros to the airport. If you haven’t already checked with your banks AND credit card companies to tell them you are going overseas, you need to do that. Banks are closed tomorrow, so you may have to call them on Tuesday morning on your way to the airport so that you can use your debit/credit cards overseas. They will just need to know where you are so they don’t deny the use of your bank card.
- Download the Delta app on your phone. You can get a digital boarding pass that way and track any checked bags. It’s awesome!
- Bring any medications (in their original bottles) with you and make sure you have more than enough for the trip. Bring any cold/decongestants or other general use things you often use (ibuprofen, Benadryl, Alleve, etc.)
- Pack WARM and COMFORTABLE shoes. To borrow a line from the Fresh Prince…”You go to school to learn, not for a fashion show!” And learning we will be doing!
- Bring a laptop or tablet or something with which you can write nightly assignments. If you are comfortable doing that on your phone, great, but that may not be good enough. We will have wifi at night in our hotels.
- Bring a European adapter for your electronics!
- Bring a daybag/backpack/purse with empty water bottle for use during our days on the road and out and about.
- Sleep well in the next 2 nights, we will be running on empty on day one, but it is best for our jetlag to suffer through it in Brussels for a day.
- Leave room in your suitcase to bring back stuff…like CHOCOLATES…or art or comic books or whatever. Don’t overpack. You really only need socks and underwear for 9 days and jeans/pants/shirts can be recycled…sort of.
- Get your first blog post done before Monday at midnight!
I am sure I will think of more but that’s a start! See you Tuesday!
Welcome to our travel blog!
First blog post
Welcome students, parents, visitors and virtual friends to our travel blog to Belgium and The Netherlands. This past fall I had the distinct pleasure to teach my First Year Seminar course Art, Politics and Power to these students and now 16 plucky first year students will accompany me and my colleague Vicki Clift on our adventure! We will be depositing our lessons learned here for all to see, along with photos and updates. So let’s meet the crew!
I am Lillian, the leader of this expedition. I came to be interested in this material because one of the professors emeritus at my alma mater was Lane S. Faison, a Monuments Man from WWII. After hearing of his incredible story, I wanted to study what happened to art during and after Hitler’s great theft of Europe’s treasures. Now these 16 students are in the steps of the Monuments Men this January and we will go to see with our own eyes the works we have studied, the places we have read about, and the cultures that were preserved. I am excited for a great trip!
